Guidance on General Play Scores

Dear All,

Following on from recent conversations we have had with England Golf.  They have highlighted that there is an increase in misuse of score intent submissions relating to General Play scores, up and down the country.  Some examples they have found are:

  • Signing in (giving intent) after the round has started, in some cases when the round has been completed
  • Submitting scores on days when courses have been closed
  • Submitting scores at times when daylight hours would make it impossible to complete a round.

It’s inconceivable to think that there wouldn’t be examples of this at our club so we want to start by providing members with details of how general play scores must be submitted and how penalty scores will be applied in instances where score submission rules have not been followed or in cases of handicap manipulation.

Here is a how-to submit score intent on IG, England Golf App and PSI terminals

Player Score Input Terminals (PSI) :

There are three PSIs in the clubhouse one in the TV room and one in each locker room.

  • If you want to submit a General Play scorecard, you MUST show intent BEFORE YOU TEE OFF.
  • This can be done using a PSI by first swiping your membership card.
  • Then press General Play Scoring.
  • Select the course and tees you will be playing from.
  • Then after finishing your round come back to the terminal or use the IG app to submit your scorecard.

Intelligent Golf :

  • Log in to the Intelligent Golf app.
  • Select the “Handicap Record” section.
  • Click the square icon at the top right, representing the scorecard.
  • Select the course and tees you will be playing from and click “Register and Begin Scoring”
  • Input your score for each hole.
  • Once input and checked, press “Finish” to submit your score
  • You will be asked to enter the name of your marker, they are required to verify the score within 72 hours of the score intent being made.

England Golf App:

  • Download the England Golf App and sign in to your account.
  • On the app go to the ‘Enter Score section’
  • Select the golf course you are playing, how many holes and what tee you are playing.
  • Add the players you are playing with. Then start your round.
  • You MUST complete the previous steps before your first tee shot. You can’t sign in afterwards.
  • Enter the gross score for yourself and your playing partners during your round.
  • Once you’ve finished check the scores are correct then sign your card.
  • Your playing partner will receive a message to approve your score.
  • They will then check your scorecard and approve your round.
  • Once approved, your card will be submitted & your Handicap Index will be updated by midnight.

In all cases, you need to ensure you have shown electronic intent before teeing off and that a score is submitted and attested within 72 hours to avoid a penalty score.

Penalty scores are automatically applied after 72 hrs and will be equivalent to a score of course rating + course handicap.

Score Intents and Score Submissions will be checked regularly by the Handicap Committee and Office Team using the reports available within IG and WHS, where cases highlight examples of the below or similar actions, this would be deemed as deliberate handicap manipulation.

  • Signing in after the start of a round
  • Submitting a score when time/daylight or course access would deem it impossible

The following sanctions would apply in these cases

First time: You will be sanctioned with a warning, along with guidance on how General Play Scores must be submitted.  The score will be deleted from your handicap record.

Second time: You will be issued a penalty score which the competitions & handicaps team will decide based on how you’ve misused the system.  For example, if it is deemed that you are trying to manipulate your handicap up, a low penalty score would be applied, if the intent was to lower your handicap then a high penalty score would be applied.

Third time: In addition to a penalty score, your Handicap will be withdrawn for two weeks through the WHS platform, preventing its use in any way at Aspley Guise or elsewhere.

If you have any questions or require any help with score submitting get in touch with a member of the Competitions and Handicaps Committee or email golf@aspleyguisegolfclub.co.uk
